No Hot Water

Going without hot water for more than a day or two usually means the heater itself has failed, not just an off day for the thermostat.

When this becomes an emergency

What a pro does

A no-hot-water call starts with figuring out whether the problem is the heater, the power or gas supply to it, or something further down the line. On the Treasure Coast, hard water is a common culprit: mineral scale builds up on the heating element or inside the tank itself, and eventually there's not enough element left exposed to heat the water passing through. The plumber checks the thermostat, the element or burner, and the tank's condition before deciding whether a repair actually makes sense or whether the tank's age and corrosion point toward replacement instead. A tank that's fifteen or twenty years old, especially one that's never had the anode rod checked, is often further along than it looks from the outside.

Frequently asked questions

Sometimes it is. Water that's lukewarm rather than stone cold often points to a thermostat or heating element issue rather than total failure. Water that's cold from the first second usually means the power or gas supply to the unit has been interrupted somewhere upstream.
Hard water leaves mineral scale behind everywhere it heats, and a water heater tank is exactly that: a vessel that heats water constantly. The scale coats the heating element or the bottom of a gas tank, insulating it from the water it's supposed to be warming, so the unit works harder and wears out faster than it would on softer water.
That depends on the tank's age and what's actually failed. A ten-year-old tank with a bad thermostat is usually worth repairing, but a fifteen-plus-year-old tank with a failed element and visible rust at the base is closer to the end of its service life, and a plumber can walk through that tradeoff once they've actually looked at it.
