What a pro does

A stubborn drain clog rarely sits right at the opening where you can see it. The plumber runs a drain camera or a motorized auger down the line to find out whether it's hair and soap buildup, a collapsed section of old pipe, or roots that have worked their way in from outside. Once the location and cause are clear, they clear the line with the tool suited to that blockage, whether that's a cable, a hydro-jetter, or something else entirely. They'll also flush the line afterward and check nearby fixtures to confirm water's actually moving through at a normal rate again.

Sometimes, if the clog is fresh and close to the drain opening, but chemical cleaners don't do much against a mass of hair wrapped around a trap or a section of pipe that's actually cracked or bellied. They can also make the job harder for a plumber later, since the caustic residue lingers in standing water. If a second treatment doesn't clear it, that's usually the point to call someone instead of dosing the drain again.
That's usually a sign the blockage isn't in one fixture's trap but further down, in a shared branch line several fixtures drain into. Air trapped behind the clog gets pushed back up through whichever opening offers the least resistance, which is why a shower can gurgle when you run the kitchen sink.
There's no fixed schedule that fits every house, since it depends on what's going down the drains and how old the pipe run is. A kitchen line handling a lot of grease or an older home with narrower cast iron branch lines will need attention more often than a newer bathroom line with light use.
