Low Water Pressure
A sudden pressure drop is worth a same-visit look, since it can point to anything from a stuck valve to a hidden leak feeding the loss.
When this becomes an emergency
- Water pressure that dropped suddenly instead of fading gradually over months
- Only certain fixtures losing pressure while others still run normally
- Pressure that dropped right after a storm, a nearby water main repair, or work on the street
What a pro does
Low water pressure has more than one possible cause, and a plumber works through them in order rather than assuming the worst one first. The pressure regulator, a fixture's own aerator or cartridge, and the main shutoff valve all get checked before anything more invasive happens, since a partially closed valve or a clogged aerator is a much simpler fix than a failing line. After hurricane season especially, pressure complaints often trace back to sediment stirred up in the municipal supply or a valve that got bumped during storm prep and never got fully reopened afterward. If the drop is isolated to one part of the house rather than the whole system, that narrows things further, toward a specific branch line rather than the service line that's coming in from the street. Salt air also takes a toll on exposed valves and fittings outside the house faster than it would further inland, so outdoor hardware gets a look too.
